This is a remote (Zoom) course offered to students at the Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses who are serious about building a startup and taking it to the next level. (As a result, the course includes an application process to ensure the selection of the most dedicated participants.)
The course aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the realm of technology startups, focusing on equipping students with the tools, knowledge, and frameworks necessary to transform innovative ideas into actionable business ventures.
As an experiential learning course, students will work hands-on to develop innovative startups throughout the semester. Through a blend of lectures, case studies, guest speaker sessions, in-person and project-based learning, students will learn to navigate the complexities of launching and managing a startup in today's dynamic business environment. Topics covered include lean startup methodology, product development, patents, fundraising through venture capital and angel investors, customer acquisition, and more.
Students will receive individualized mentorship and the necessary frameworks for their startup ideas to launch. The final assessment of the course culminates in students presenting their startups in-person to industry judges at the NESTS FlyOff demo day. This event serves as a qualifier for top students to compete in the annual New York Business Plan Competition, receive referrals to startup incubators, and gain opportunities to present their ventures at CoECS events.
